  1. Did you know the word Bible comes from the Greek word Biblia, meaning books. No wonder it’s called the Bible: it’s a collection of 66 books!
  2. Amazing fact is that Bible was written over a period of some 1,500 years, from around 1450 B.C. (the time of Moses) to about 100 A.D. (following the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ) by over 40 different authors from all walks of life: shepherds, farmers, tent-makers, physicians, fishermen, priests, philosophers and kings.
  3. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew before the birth of Jesus. The New Testament was written in Greek  covering the life of Christ and beyond.
  4. Entire Bible has 66 books,1189 chapters,31,102 verses. Old Testament has 39 books,929 chapters, 23,145 verses while New Testament has,27 books,260 chapters,7957 verses.
  5. The first three words in the Bible are ‘in the beginning’. The five books of the Bible, referred to as the Pentateuch , the foundation of Bible , were written by Moses. The last word in the Bible is ‘Amen’. The Apostle Paul  wrote 14 books (over half) of the New Testament.
  6. Psalm 117 is the shortest book in the Bible with only two verses.

  8. The oldest almost complete manuscript of the Bible now in existence is The Codex Vaticanus, which dates from the first half of the fourth Century. It is located in the library of the Vatican in Rome.
  9. A Bible in the University of Gottingen is written on 2,470 palm leaves.
  10. The Bible was divided in to chapters by Stephen Langton in 1228. The Old Testament was divided in to verses by R. Nathan in 1488, and the New Testament by Robert Stephanus in 1551.
  11. Bible claims to be the actual words of God. The Bible says more than 3,000 times “thus saith the Lord.” It claims that the words which follow are quotes from God.

  19. The term ‘scapegoat’ comes from the use of a goat in Bible that was to receive the sins of the people and be released into the wilderness.
  20. The sheep is the most frequently mentioned animal in the Bible.
  21. The only domestic animal not mentioned in the Bible is the cat.
  22. Salt is mentioned more than 30 times in the Bible. There are 49 different foods mentioned in the Bible.
  23. There is a 9th century Germanic ‘Bible’ which presents Jesus as a warrior-king.
  24. Laws mentioned in the Bible required farmers to leave parts of their fields unharvested for strangers, a practice that still exists in parts of the world.
  25. Swearing on the Bible, is against the Bible.
  26. In the Old Testament, Yahweh (God) actually sues Israel for breach of contract (the Sinai covenant). It is the only amazing instance of God initiating a lawsuit against humans in the Bible.
  27. Methuselah, from the Bible, is accredited as being the oldest person to have ever lived, dying at the age of 969 years (Genesis 5:27)  but it is thought that this is a mistranslation and that he was 969 lunar months old when he died (78.5 years old) since early Judaic tribes used lunar months to gauge time.
  28. Amazing fact is that according the stories in the Bible, God killed minimum 2,400,000 people, while Satan killed only about 10.
  29. In the Bible, God sent two bears to murder 42 children because they had mocked a man for being bald.
  30. The phrase ‘God never gives you more than you can handle’ never appears in the Bible and actually the opposite is said multiple times .
  31. In the Bible, Adam is not banished from Eden for eating the fruit of knowledge. Instead, he is banished in case he eats the fruit of another forbidden tree, which will make him immortal.
  32. As per Bible , King Solomon had 700 wives, 300 concubines, and 12,000 horses.
  33. There is an organization that illegally parachutes copies of The Bible into North Korea.
  34. The first translation of the English Bible was initiated by John Wycliffe and completed by John Purvey in 1388.
  35. The Bible was printed in 1454 A.D. by Johannes Gutenberg who invented the “type mold” for the printing press. It was in fact the first book ever printed.
  36. The Bible is the most sold book of all time. There are more than 168,000 Bibles either sold or given away per day in the United States alone. It has been translated into more than 1,200 languages. In fact the most shoplifted book in the world is the Bible.
  37. In 1631, two London Bible printers amazingly left the word “not” out of the seventh commandment by nistake , which then read, “Thou shalt commit adultery.” This legendary book is now known as the “Wicked Bible.”
  38. Voltaire, the French philosopher was an atheist, threatened that he will see to the destruction of the Bible and its removal from the face of the earth. What happened is that the Bible Society bought the house where he was born after his death and today that building is one of the biggest sales centers of the Bible.
  39. The first translation of the Bible made in America was printed in 1808. It was the work of Charles Thomson.
  40. In 2011, British calligrapher Donald Jackson and a team of calligraphers completed what is believed to the first handwritten Bible with illustrations since the invention of the printing press. It took 12 years to complete and cost $8 million.
